Benjamin Kalivas, MD, is an assistant professor dual appointed in the Departments of Medicine and Psychiatry. Clinically he works as an academic hospitalist and brain stimulation psychiatrist. Dr. Kalivas completed his residency and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry. After completing his residency, he served as Chief Resident for the Department of Medicine before joining the faculty at MUSC.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kalivas has served as the program director for the Combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry residency program. He is active in resident and student education and is a core faculty member in both departments. Dr. Kalivas also serves as the Medical Director of Graduate Medical Education (GME) Quality and Safety, where he facilitates the implementation of quality improvement and a culture of safety for over 800 residents and fellows working at MUSC.

Dr. Kalivas actively researches delirium, a dangerous neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with acute medical illness. He works at implementing best practices and studying how delirium impacts hospitalized patients.
